The Tasty Benefits of Chia Seeds

My new favorite treat is chia seed drinks. They come in many different flavors and the chia seeds float suspended in the juice and have the feel of small tapioca pearls. I love to drink a bottle before going to the gym, because chia has a remarkable energizing effect. My favorite of the growing number of companies offering chia drinks is Mamma Chia, started by an awesome women named Janie.

Mamma Chia

She and her husband, Lance, own a small organic farm in rural San Diego with their 2 kitties, Spanky and Sparky, and their dog, Yogi.

Mamma Chia pairs organic chia seeds with organic fruit juices and is lightly sweetened with organic agave nectar. The seeds provide heart and brain-healthy omega-3s, powerful antioxidants and dietary fibers, as well as complete protein, calcium and magnesium.

Chia seeds come from the desert plant Salvia hispanica, a member of the mint family that grows in North, Central and South America. Consumed as early as 3,000 B.C., chia seeds were eaten as a grain, mixed with water, ground into flour, mixed into medicines, and pressed for omega-3 oil.

Chia seeds, an ancient grain, were revered by both the Maya and Aztecs for their amazing energy and natural healing powers. In pre-Columbian times, chia seeds were a main component of both the Aztec and Maya diets, and played a prominent role in religious ceremonies. One tablespoon of the seeds was considered capable of sustaining a warrior for 24 hours.

The GoodWeave label is the assurance that no child labor was used in the making of your rug. In order to earn the GoodWeave label, rug exporters and importers must be licensed under the GoodWeave certification program and sign a legally binding contract to do the following: adhere to the no-child-labor standard and not employ any person under age 14; allow unannounced random inspections by local inspectors; endeavor to pay fair wages to adult workers; and pay a licensing fee that helps support GoodWeave’s monitoring, inspections and education programs. To ensure compliance, independent GoodWeave inspectors make unannounced inspections of each loom. If inspectors find children working, they offer them the opportunity to go to school instead, and the producers lose their status with GoodWeave. To protect against counterfeit labeling, each label is numbered so its origin can be traced to the loom on which the rug was produced.
