PosiPair Moves to Phase 2

We are happy to announce that PosiPair was one of the 52 companies out of 284 that made it into the second round of the Wisconsin Governor’s Business Plan Contest. We now have until March 12th to compete a 1,000 executive summary. After that about two-dozen companies move on to Phase 3, where we'll get to submit a full business plan and a chance to win some of the $150,000 in cash and in-kind prizes that have been pledged thus far. Last year we were a finalist, so we hope to do even better in 2010.

News of 2010

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

It has been awhile since my last blog post, and a lot has happened here at PosiPair headquarters. We've been keeping our heads down working on putting the finishing touches on the website and I can almost taste the approaching launch. We're working with a great group of developers in Milwaukee.

We received some great news last week from the Wisconsin Department of Commerce. PosiPair has been awarded the highly sought after "Qualified New Business Venture" certification from the state of Wisconsin. Only slightly over 100 businesses have the QNBV certification, which means that investors in PosiPair are now eligible for a 25 percent tax credit on the amount they invest in the company. In the future the credit could be as high as 40 percent for the first $500K.

We also sent off our Phase 1 entry for this year's Wisconsin Governors Business Plan contest. We'll find out on Feb. 21st if we're going on to Phase 2.

New Advisory Board Member

We're very happy to announce that cutting edge thinker, Michael Shuman, has agreed to be on our board of advisors. He is an economist, attorney, author, and entrepreneur. Michael is the BALLE (Business Alliance for Local Living Economies) research and public policy director. If you've never heard of BALLE, I encourage you to check them out. BALLE believes in the power of local businesses to transform communities for the better by working cooperatively toward a shared vision. And of course, we here at PosiPair couldn't agree more. Michael has authored, coauthored, or edited seven books, including The Small Mart Revolution: How Local Businesses Are Beating the Global Competition (Berrett-Koehler, 2006) and (Free Press, 1998).

We video taped Michael recently in Madison, WI at the Future Cities 2009 Conference organized by PosiPair co-founder Ben Manski, and will post those sessions soon.

Midwest Cleantech 2009 Innovation Competition

At PosiPair we're happy to announce that we've been chosen as one the the 12 finalists in the 2nd annual Midwest Global Cleantech conference in Chicago Nov. 23-24, 2009 at the Federal Reserve Bank. This conference is all about the intersection of emerging innovative companies, global business opportunity and cleantech investors. Please check out www.midwestcleantech2009.org for more information about the conference.

The Innovation Competition was created to help early stage emerging Clean Tech companies in the Midwest gain visibility and make connections. As a finalist we're provided with one complementary registration for the conference and a space for PosiPair in the Business Opportunity Session of the conference adjacent to the exhibit area. Conference attendees will include entrepreneurs, angel, venture capital and corporate strategic investors, representatives of international firms and trade commissioners, corporate R&D managers, university researchers and officials engaged in technology transfer, and more.

Here are the other finalists:

Sarah Manski Mentioned in The Frugal Millionairess Blog

By, Eileen Schnabel

Never Eat Alone, The Simple Dollar, PosiPair, and Building Your/My Company.

For awhile now I've subscribed via email to the free newsletter called "The Simple Dollar". The author Trent Hamm is, as I am, learning constantly about how to live on less, what in life is most important, and how to write well. You can see why I find his site helpful.

He's also done a series of book reviews that I've found really useful. His most recent, "Never Eat Alone" by Keith Ferrazzi sparked my interest enough to get the book from the library. The main point of the book is that people are your main source of success, whether personal, professional, community, family, or other. And the larger the network (the sincere type, not the sleazy type) you can create, the more success you will have.

I heard this echoed in person today, when the CEO of PosiPair, Sarah Manski, agreed to meet me for an hour at Ancora to discuss my business idea, which started as the nightlight and has grown to create a portal for dual use educational products. She was a MAJOR help in the next set of steps I should take. She is launching an internet company, an online marketplace for the green economy, and is about a year ahead of me, so I'm able to sort of walk in her footsteps.

We first met because she wanted feed back from potential customers about her idea. I told her everything I could from my perspective, then came home more excited than ever to start my own business. About the same time I attended the All Things Life Sciences venture capital forum and decided to take the leap.

Let me share with you some of Sarah's advice to me today in the hopes it might also help those of you who are starting a business this year. These are the ideas she suggested.

1. For the past year, much of her work has been building a network of business owners, investors, potential customers, etc. She has set a goal of three one hour meetings a day and says nothing else she has done could match how helpful that's been. She gets new ideas from each contact. She suggested I make a list of people that might help, such as some of the baby/learning stores in the area and ask the owners what sells, what doesn't, and what some of the voids are in the market.

2. I should consider entering the Governor's Business Plan competition, for which she was a finalist last year and got free office space as her award. The initial entries, just 500 words, is due in December, so I am going to look into that. Many states have something similar so even if you're not from Wisconsin, a quick google search can give you some leads.

3. I need to get a URL with some sort of .com address soon. I'm still stuck on a the perfect name - suggestions?

4. I should be CEO (which was my plan) because there are many CEO breakfasts that are networking events that only CEO's can go to. She also said when you call someplace and identify yourself as a CEO, you're much better positioned to talk to the CEO of that company.

5. There is an early stage company symposium coming up that will have a number of venture capitalists. She suggested I have business cards by then and try to attend.

6. I already have enough to submit my application to the mentor program. She said they don't expect a full out business plan and the a 500 word summary is enough. There are lots of these mentoring programs, so look into this if you haven't already. Two heads are better than one, and if one has already built a successful company, that's like having three or more heads;-). SCORE has a lot of mentor programs and the Small Business Administration can be a great source as well. So I will have this sent off by next Tuesday

7. Starting a website can run around $2,000 for a basic website with a shopping cart, but to start getting custom work gets into numbers like $20,000 to $100,000. And even the $20,000 would not include user testing and scalability if you need to be able to have hundreds of thousands of people checking your site after an article in The New York Times comes out.

8. I should build the website using drupal as it has a good security track record and most of the programmers I might eventually hire would be familiar with it. It's also very standardized. She mentioned Obama may be switching many government programs to this system.

9. I should have a media tab on my site- so I can do press released on anything from the launch to any grants or presentations or other news. She highly recommended getting a media list to email all the press releases to. She's been on television and radio and she said much of this was having a well-put together story that makes it easy for media to slot you in.

10. I will need to do a lot of consumer research and ask parents what they want to see in the the dual use educational market, what they would buy and what they wouldn't and why.

11. The hardest part is to get people to come to your site. What else do you offer other than buying the product? Here there could be educational news, interviews, blogs, early childhood studies, etc.

So in closing, I have a lot of homework for the next few weeks. Thanks Sarah from Posi-Pair for all your time and suggestions. And thanks Trent for the book review, which helped me find a book I probably would never have otherwise.

Best wishes! Eileen

PosiPair Selected as a 2009 Wisconsin Early Stage Symposium Presenter

We are thrilled to be selected to present in the Wisconsin Angel Network Investors’ Track at the 2009 Wisconsin Early Stage Symposium.

The conference will be held Nov. 10-11 at Madison’s Monona Terrace Community and Convention Center, 1 John Nolen Drive. The Wisconsin Angel Network (WAN) Investors’ Track will take place on Tuesday, Nov. 10 from 2:45 p.m. to 4:45 p.m.

There will be two presentation tracks running simultaneously. One track will consist of companies in the biotechnology, medical device and health care sectors and the other track (which I will present in) will consist of largely information technology, advanced manufacturing and “cleantech” companies.

Each presenters will be allowed 7 minutes to present their business plan with a PowerPoint presentation. Conference registration is open to everyone, so stop by our table and say "hello" if you attend.

PosiPair Awarded $3K Grant

We are happy to announce that PosiPair was awarded another grant from the Wisconsin Entrepreneurs' Network! We will receive a $3K grant to hire a grant writing consultant to help us write an SBIR grant. We're applying for a $150K Phase I SBIR from the National Science Foundation. It's due at the beginning of December, so we have a lot of work to do in the next month.

PosiPair Gains Statewide Recognition

My husband and I were happy to to be invited to the Governor's Mansion this week. We joined the other Governor's Business Plan finalists at a reception with Dick Leinenkugel. In addition to being awarded one year's free rent in the new Metro Innovation Center, we also received $3,400 of in-kind IT services from Aberdean Consulting.

We were featured on WKOW's Channel 27 website.

The final website is coming along swimmingly and we're moving into the new office at the end of the month.

One Year of Free Rent

Great news! As a finalist in the Governor's Business Plan Contest, CEO Sarah Manski, won a year's free rent for the PosiPair office. That means PosiPair will be moving from 122 State Street to the new Metro Innovation Center at 1245 East Washington Ave. The Metro Innovation Center was formerly the home of Marquip, which made high-tech equipment for corrugated cardboard container manufacturers. Now it hosts a sleek set of 10 suites equipped with the latest voice and data technology as well as two conference rooms and a small kitchen.

"We're honored and excited to be chosen as one of the state's top companies, and we're looking forward to sharing office space with other innovative start-ups in the fields of information technology, computer science, engineering and medical devices." says Sarah Manski

PosiPair in Madison Magazine

In this month's Madison Magazine (page 73) there is a picture of PosiPair CEO Sarah Manski and Madison Magazine's Tiffany Thom, presenting Jack O'Kear and the Willy Street Co-Op this year's 100% Green Award. PosiPair organized the Green Business Awards at the Going Green Wisconsin Expo, and the attendees of the expo voted online at the PosiPair booth for their award winning picks from among the other booths. Attendees chose Second Rain to receive the Transformation Award and Habitat for Humanity to receive the Community Builder Award. We're looking forward to organizing the awards again next year.

The Green Business Awards

We just finished setting up the PosiPair exhibit at this weekend's Wisconsin Going Green Expo. We're partnering with Madison Magazine and organizing the first ever Green Business Awards at the expo.

The three awards are:

  • The 100% Award, given to the greenest overall business.
  • The Transformation Award, given to the business that's made the biggest industry-changing breakthrough.
  • The Community Award, given to the business that has demonstrated the greatest social & community responsibility.

Almost 10,000 people are expected to attend this year's expo. PosiPair will have a computer voting station at their exhibit where attendees can vote for their favorite green business picks.

In keeping with the expo and PosiPair's vision for a sustainable future, the three awards plaques will be made by Total Awards & Promotions, Inc. from recycled and reclaimed materials, like old newspapers and sunflower seed shells. There will even be prizes for those who vote. Some of these prizes include: $150 Gift Certificate toward Private Pilates & Bodywork Sessions from 4Pillars4Health EcoSpace, LLC, $130 plus a gift certificate from The Kitchen Gallery, LLC, and a gift basket of toys from Bad Dog Frida.

If you're attending the expo please stop by and say hello.

Sweet! We're "members of a very exclusive club"

We made it to Phase 3 in the Wisconsin Governor’s Business Plan Contest - the final writing phase. This is great! We're now going to have to figure out a way to shrink our business plan down to 20 pages (really 17, because the cover page, table of contents, & appendices count). But, it should be no problem getting that done by 5 p.m. CST on Monday, April 27th.

Thomas Still, President of the Wisconsin Technology Council, says "the contestants who advanced represent only 6 percent of the total entries. They're members of a very exclusive club."

PosiPair is in the Business Services category, so we have four competitors. The other categories include life sciences, advanced manufacturing, and information technology.

I can't wait to find out if we're one of the 12 finalists who get to give a powerpoint presentation to a panel of judges on June 9th at the Entrepreneurs’ Conference in Milwaukee's Hyatt Regency Hotel.

Grants are Great!

Things just keep getting better in the PosiPair universe. I am happy to report we were awarded a $3,000 Early Planning Grant from the Wisconsin Entrepreneurs’ Network (WEN) & the Wisconsin Department of Commerce!

Metro Innovation Center - What a cool place.

Yesterday from 3 pm to 6 pm I was at the new Metro Innovation Center talking about PosiPair. (I also ate a chocolate truffle or two : ) We had a table full of products from green businesses signed up to be PosiPair beta testers. Special thanks to Alison at Happy Bambino, Meleah at Cha Cha Tea, Natasha at Indocara, Christie at Community GroundWorks, Bryant at SustainDane, Kari at Harmony and Health and others! Our next event is the Green Business Expo coming up May 2nd. We'll have an even larger exhibit and more space to show off Wisconsin's great green businesses. Hope to see you there.

PosiPair to be featured at the Metro Innovation Center

I've been recognized as an "outstanding entrepreneur" by the University Research Park and invited to have a table at the Metro Innovation Center Community Reception on Thursday, April 2. - Cool.

Please join us and stop by the PosiPair table to say hi.

The event's goals are to introduce to the public to a new facility that the University Research Park is opening on East Washington. They will be featuring UW student and alumni entrepreneurs giving guests an opportunity to see the new and exciting endeavors that Madison is experiencing. The guests will also include key business decision makers, Chancellor Biddy Martin, UW System staff, Mayor Dave Cieslewicz and other government officials.

The event will be at 1245 East Washington at the new Metro Innovation Center from 3p-6p.

PosiPair has a new look - WOW!

We are delighted that PosiPair now has a new look. This is a sneak preview of the final website's design. We received a lot of feedback about how you wanted your PosiPair website to look and feel and I think we've successfully captured all of your great ideas. We love to hear your feedback and bursts of creative brilliance, so please keep it coming!

PosiPair in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinal

Yesterday I attended the Governor's Business Plan Contest Boot Camp in Milwaukee, WI. As I walked in, Liz Schrum handed me a green plastic lightbulb and shook my hand. Jack Orton from the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel snapped a photo.

Here's an excerpt:

Boot camp participants dove into networking and an experiment with an opening exercise that had them sharpening pencils in others' light bulb-shaped sharpeners while each tried to give a 90-second business plan summary.

Having to give the summary right out of the gate provided immediate, constructive feedback, said Sarah Manski, chief executive of PosiPair.com, a Madison company that is developing a Web site where environmentally friendly local businesses can post profiles and sell products.

Other speakers included: Tim Keane, who runs the Marquette Golden Angels investing network; Janet Phillips, CEO of Vector Surgical, an Oconomowoc company that makes tools to help surgeons operate more quickly and accurately; and several lawyers from the Milwaukee office of Reinhart Boerner Van Deuren, where the boot camp was held.

Here's the link - Entrepreneurs compete at business plan contest.

We're in!

I got a much awaited email this afternoon that had me jump out of my chair. The subject line read - Congratulations you will advance to Phase 2 of the BPC - Woohoo! That means PosiPair is a member of the elite 15 percent that survived the first round cut. Now we get to attend a Business Plan Contest “boot camp” on Wednesday, February 25, 2009 at the Milwaukee law offices of Reinhart Boerner Van Deuren, S.C. and submit a 1,000 word Summary Business Plan by 5 p.m. Thursday, March 12. There are only 51 Phase 2 contestants and we're all hoping to advance to Phase 3 where we have a chance to win a Grand Prize worth $50,000.

Stimulus packs some green MoJo

I encourage you to read the uplifting article in Mother Jones Magazine about how the new stimulus package is going to help grow a sustainable green economy. Hurray!

Here's an excerpt:

"Roughly $60 billion of the $789 billion package will be devoted to spending on clean energy, environmental projects, and scientific research...The conference bill's near-final numbers contain $11 billion for the creation of a smart energy grid; $8.4 billion for public transit; $6.3 billion for state and local energy efficiency grants; $6 billion for the cleanup of contaminated Department of Defense sites; $4.5 billion to green federal buildings; and $1.2 billion for the EPA's cleanup programs. Loan guarantees for nuclear and so-called clean coal technology development—included in the Senate bill—were cut. Tax credit programs, incentivizing research and investment in clean renewable energy, will add further to the bill's green tally."

Raising The Angel Round

The mood at PosiPair is one of excitement. We are raising our first round of angel investment, and we've been receiving lots of positive feedback and interest from Wisconsin investors.

On Tuesday, I was one of three entrepreneurs invited to present at a local investment forum. (Thanks to Allen for inviting me!). It went well, I thought, even though I had a tough act to follow. Now, people will often say, "that's a tough act to follow," but in my case it really was true. Imagine making your presentation immediately after a guy who's discovered a cure for cancer (no joke). That's what I did, and I think it went well. Representatives from the WI Technology Council, WI Investment Partners, Wood Investment Services, and CW Technologies LLC were in attendance and we have follow up meetings scheduled this week with some of the members.

Just this morning, I was invited to be a guest this morning on a local Madison radio station program. WORT 89.9 FM's 8 O’Clock Buzz is one of south central Wisconsin's most popular morning drive-time shows. Check out the interview here: Download the mp3

Finally . . . any day now, we'll find out whether PosiPair has made it through to the next round of the Governor's Business Plan Competition. I'll keep you posted.

Why I started PosiPair

Boy, has the shift to a green economy ever been a long time coming! My husband and I were active in the anti-sweatshop student movement of the 1990s, and we remember what an uphill battle it was to convince students and administrators that they should care about the conditions in which their sneakers and clothing were being produced. We were on the outside, looking in, demanding a change from business-as-usual. Today --with Fair Trade, organic, sweat-free, you-name-it production gone mainstream-- that change is finally here. I'm glad to see it!

I first got the idea of starting a website like PosiPair only a few months ago, in November of 2008. I was interviewing Sara Alvarado of the Alvarado Real Estate Group for my Masters thesis on sustainable local green businesses. Sara and her husband run a green real estate agency in Madison, Wisconsin. During the interview, Sara described how her firm partners with other green businesses --the local eco-painter, the recycled carpet installer, the green building contractor, and so on-- forming, in effect, a local sustainable industry loop.

Over the course of several more interviews with people like Ken Monteleone at Fromagination and Lisa Jacobson of Mermaid Cafe, I came to realize the extent to which local green businesses are in this together, relying on one another for products, services, distribution, innovation, exposure, and, surprisingly, solidarity. Interdependence, rather than competition, is the watchword for these community leaders.

It happened that at the same time I was doing my graduate research, I was also learning web programming languages like html, CSS, PHP, and Drupal. It occurred to me that despite all the connections formed between green businesses, there was nothing online that truly served the needs of this growing economic sector.

My goal for PosiPair is to celebrate and protect green businesses, to help them find customers and business partners, and to use their example to inspire others to follow their lead. Through the practice of positive product pairing, PosiPair can help both businesses and advocates build a new economy around the key values of social justice, local democracy, non-violence, and ecology.
